When you look at a life‑size baryonyx realistic model, the first thing you might wonder is what this dinosaur actually hunted. The short answer is that Baryonyx walkeri almost certainly targeted big fish, snagged the occasional small dinosaur, and definitely did not turn up its nose at a free meal of carrion. That mix of prey types is backed up by a combination of anatomical clues, stomach‑content finds, and ecological analogies.

1. What the anatomy tells us

The skull of Baryonyx is packed with features that scream “fish‑eater”. Its snout is long, narrow, and ends in a rounded tip – a shape you’ll see in modern gharials and some crocodiles. The teeth are ziphodont: laterally compressed and blade‑like, perfect for gripping slippery prey. A massive thumb claw, roughly 31 cm (12 in) in the holotype specimen, probably acted like a hook or a slash when the animal struck. Nostrils and eye sockets sit high on the skull, letting Baryonyx breathe while mostly submerged. Add the deep, interlocked palate, and you get a predator that could generate suction while still holding onto a struggling fish.

More dramatically, a juvenile Iguanodon skeleton was found lodged against the ribs of another Baryonyx specimen (BMNH R95), indicating that the predator at least occasionally tackled land‑based prey. Bite marks on large ornithischian bones from the same strata also hint at opportunistic scavenging.
